prison rape

Which is why men  should stfu. Because the only time they bring up prison rape anyway is when they joke about it (usually with references to libidinous black men –  double points if you can cram racism and sexual violence into one joke), or if they are trying to derail a conversation about women being raped.

if men really seriously have a problem with prison rape (and its obvious they dont, otherwise they wouldnt joke about it so flippantly all the time), then I guess they should stop raping other men in prison or something. CRAZY SOLUTION, I KNOW.

Before I was a radical feminist, before I was a feminist, before I was well read in anything THIS was the one thing that would make me insanely angry. Anytime I hear men joke about rape in prison, or discuss it with horror I am completely offended. You NEVER hear the word “rape” out of a man’s mouth unless it is in reference to another MAN being raped or suffering the threat of rape, or raping. I was obsessed and any time it came up I would say, “pop quiz: who is more likely to be raped, a women in the real world or a man in prison?” Everyone would get it wrong every time.

I think the statistic is that 1/20 is raped in prison, while 1/4 is raped ‘on the outside’. Both groups underreport, but still I think the disparity is glaring.

also, I have done some reading on this, and I dont believe that even in prison women rape other women very often. Men rape other men “often” in prison, but women don’t. There is definite violence coercion and sexual assault between women in prison, yes. But if rape is forced intercourse-penetration- women just don’t seem to do this, even when they violently want to exert power over someone. I wonder why this is?

it bothers me when men go on and on about prison rape too. Once when I was a teenager 2 of the men in my family were having some big long discussion about how terrible prison rape is, and what one should do to avoid it (uh, stay out of prison? Gee, I wish it were that simple for women to avoid rape!) I interjected that female rape is a much bigger problem, and they said “oh, but being raped is worse for men”.

I mean, that’s what men really think. When a woman is raped, men think it’s just sex anyway.

But if rape is forced intercourse-penetration- women just don’t seem to do this, even when they violently want to exert power over someone. I wonder why this is?

Yes, it’s interesting. I think women are just far less likely to conflate penetrating someone with having power over them.

  7. January 1, 2011 3:36 pm

I think it’s that women are just a bit more, okay a lot more, decent to each other on average. And comitting rape is somewhere that most women just won’t go. Women aren’t perfect by any stretch, but not only are women socialized to be more cooperative etc but I think those positive qualities come more naturally.

It continuallys amazes me the way even feminists prefer to minimize the effects of testosterone. Like oh noes it couldn’t possibly cause aggression! As if socialization alone is the culprit. I suck at search strings, and take absolutely forever to find anything, especially when everyone involved prefers to bury the info, but it seems like the idea that “testosterone is neutral and doesn’t cause aggression” is one of the pilars upon which denial sits. The radical feminist who can debunk the neutrality of testosterone would be the one who advances feminism the most, in the coming year.

    Speaking of, HOPPY NEW YEAR!

I mean, even seven years ago the neurobiologists had no trouble admitting to me that of course T causes aggression. Then, when it dawned on them that aggression was the thing that caused men to be assholes, both to each other, women, and the planet, the meme changed literally overnight.

I dont know, I think on the other hand testosterone is often used to excuse male aggression. For a recent example, I read a newspaper article about bar room brawls, and the subheading was something like “What happens when you mix testosterone and alcohol?” Among lay people at least testostrone is almost short hand for male aggression, but it has the effect of making this aggression seem inevitable, like – “oh, the poor dears, they simply cant help themselves from being violent thugs!”

Men only talk about rape to threaten women or to make some funny joke about how they wish they had a female teacher who touched them when they were in school. If rape is worse for men, they can thank the patriarchy they so desperately latch on to.Men who joke about being raped ,and often shame men who were raped by women as boys ,are one of the reasons men have trouble admitting they were taken advantage of. If they really gave a damn about male rape victims they would cut out all the “You’re a man, you’re supposed to like that!” crap, and try to help the victims out in some way. The only reason why prison rape concerns them is because a male being raped by another man seems to take away some masculinity. They’re concerned about the masculinity they assume is ‘lost’ by male rape victims, not the victims themselves. Selfish, even with their own kind.

Yes, its an example of the whole ” patriarchy hurts men toooooooo” business.

Under the patriarchy it is conceptually impossible for a woman to sexually assault a man, because men are assumed to be always up for it. This isn’t true in reality, and it must suck for men and boys who are sexually assaulted by women, but frankly, in light of male-on-female sexual assault rates, the phenomenon is rather insignificant and not very interesting to me as a feminist.

It’s another one of those patriarchal trade-offs that men as a class have made. The patriarchy defines men as the rapist class, and women as the raped class. This might make things difficult for the very few men who are “raped” by women, and have no language or mental framework to describe/validate their experience, but ultimately men as a class benefit from this patriarchal definition more than they are disadvantaged by it.

And this of course explains why men have no interest whatsoever in challenging this definition, and why they will continue to make jokes about wishing *they* were lucky enough to be “raped” by a woman when they were growing up, har har.

For what it’s worth… the stats I’ve got on sexual assault (not exclusively rape) against prisoners is 1 in 4 women, 1 in 5 men, and 1 in 8 incarcerated juveniles. It’s usually a prison employee – not a fellow inmate – who is the perpetrator. Also, the vast majority of the folks doing the assaults? Surprise – it’s men. So, yeah, male prisoners are in vulnerable, dangerous situations due to predatory men who get off on their power over another person… but that’s exactly what women inside *AND* outside of prison face every day in every corner of the world. Or, what Miska said 🙂

Lookin’ forward to more posts and cool graphics!

    True facts:

If every man (which, is quite literally, every man I’ve met, even the ones who raped me) who said that they thought rape was disgusting and wrong actually believed it and followed through with the whole not raping womyn and girls – the world would be a better place.

  15. January 2, 2011 11:43 am

‘zactly berryblade. All men hate rape, all men hate rapists. Apparently.

… doesnt stop them from raping though.

And it always pisses me off, whenever theres a high profile rape case (one of the rape rape cases, where some pristine white virgin is attacked by some dude who jumps out of the bushes) I mean, men are really quick to denounce it, all “HOW DARE THEY DO THAT. RAPE IS TERRIBLE!1!”. It’s fucking hypocrisy of the worst kind. Because when it’s their favorite footy star or wikileaker on trial they’re all “Rape? Nuh uh, bitches be crazy”

  16. January 2, 2011 11:48 am

Thanks for the stats Lishra. Interesting how women are still more likely to be prison-raped than men. Yet the phrase “prison rape” is associated with male rape. that is fucked up.

Prison rape of women occurs because there is the attrocity of having male prison guards guarding women’ prisons! I was shocked when I learned the state of California had such huge numbers of male prison guards in female prisons.

That said, testosterone does have such obvious aggressive effects, but that is no excuse for attacking women. Men can and do have self control. O.J. never bashed his boss at work, and certainly never mistreated his corporate sponsor bosses, he just bashed and killed his wife behind closed doors!

And finally, there was some work in New York City, where they compared gay male bars to straight men’s bars, and the police were called thousands of times to break up fights in the straight bars, the stopped serving beer in bottles, but never had violence in the gay male bars,

And when we neutered our big male dog, he became much more gentle and obedient. Geez, to end war, could we neuter the male world?

And on the title –SCUM-O-Rama— love the reference to Valerie Solanis and her famous Society for Cutting Up Men — manifesto.

Sheila, I think it’s atrocious that the state allow males to work in female prisons. Likewise, I dont think males should work in female wards of mental institutions. Or ANYWHERE where female people are forcibly detained.

Re gay bars, I would have to agree about the comparative lack of aggression. In all the years I have been going to bars, I have never seen a violent fight break out in a gay bar (nor lesbian bars, except for this one time, but that was between 2 straight men who shouldnt have been there anyway). In straight bars fights seem as regular as clockwork. And I have probably spent way more time in gay/lesbian bars than straight ones.

It certainly supports the idea that it’s not biology that causes male aggression, but masculinity, which gives male aggression a free pass in certain outlets – bar brawls, wife beating – but not in others – boss beating (as you mentioned).

Personally i am inclined to think that for whatever reason (T most likely) males *are* naturally more predisposed to aggression, but ultimately social conditioning is responsible for tempering it or amplifying it depending on context.

Also, re SCUM: Lol. When I registered the blog I was only referencing “radscum”, but then I noticed the Solanis connection and realized the title was even more apt!

I’ve heard the whole “it’s worse when men get raped” argument a lot too. It’s like that They usually, after realizing the bile that just erupted out of their mouth, attempt to rationalize it with well anal rape hurts worse. I mean your vagina is built for it. So basically the rationale is that women, are built for raping so it’s not that bad.

I’ve also heard countless times that women who are raped shouldn’t press charges because it ruins men’s lives if they get sent to prison. The vast, vast majority of men think that most rape is just bad sex. I hate when men try to use prison rape as an excuse (no seriously) about why women should stop bitching about rape. No seriously, I heard some dude going on about how men in prison will get raped (not might, will) and it will ruin their life over just a kind of bad night. I shit you not, he actually said women are blowing it out of proportion and ruining men’s lives over one bad night and women who press charges are selfish.

As a rape survivor myself and a supporter of the Prison Rape Elimination Act, there are many men and women devoted to ending prison rape and willing to discuss it in a serious manner, rather than just the immature men you’ve been unfortunately exposed to and described above.

Just Detention International is one very serious organization with regard to abolition of prison rape for all inmates and they’ve done a great deal of work in that area. I’d recommend that anyone interested in ending prison rape give them a review and get involved if moved to do so.

A recent coalition letter that included RAINN, JDI and other organizations from across the political spectrum is at the following link on my website:

I’m a woman who can discuss rape in a serious manner, James and it’s a terrible thing to be raped, isn’t it?

But what I’m serious about is this: that I am sick and fucking tired of MEN bemoaning rape (especially on a radical feminist blog, ffs) when MEN are the perpetrators of rape.

As women we do not even have to go to prison first to be raped, it happens in our own homes on a DAILY BASIS and often starts when we are still little girls. Yeah, we’re so “privileged” that we get to be *free* while we’re being raped.

Frankly I don’t give a political crap about men who are being raped in prison because the only reason they’re being raped in the first place is because there are no convenient FEMALE fuck holes available. Jesus.

James, I’d advise you to take your *progressive feminist male* schtick to Feministing; they’re rather fond of virtually fellating doods like you over there. But you already knew that didn’t you?
